First stop: Hoe Kee Chicken Rice (Chung Wah was closed)
My sister said, if you dont eat chicken rice whenever you go to Malacca, the trip wouldnt be complete.
The chubby chicken rice balls. Malacca's famous, must-eat food. Anyway, my family prefer 'loose' chicken rice. The rice balls are interesting. It's bouncy and do not break easily like fish-balls. (A weird way to describe rice balls) The 'loose' rice has the nice chicken rice aroma which we do not taste in the rice balls, although they are from the same restaurant. Based on our own judgement, the rice balls are cooked wet to allow them to stick together. So that should be how these rice are differ from.
Other than the chicken rice, I find the herbal tea (八宝凉茶) was nice too. Chilled and has the sweet lime-like aftertaste which I like. It doesnt has the bitter taste of most herbal teas. This beverage suits the hot weather best! After a round of sweat and queue for chicken rice, I truly enjoy the herbal tea.
And I love the vintage ambiance of Hoe Kee. A place suitable for 3-generations gathering.Bill total: RM 49.50 for 5 pax (We ordered food for 4 pax and 4 cups of herbal tea.)

Second stop: Donald & Lily's Cendol
Since we had chicken rice for lunch, we were too full for nyonya food at Donald and Lily's. However, we still tasted some cendol from Donald & Lily's.
They are famous for their nyonya food. But we were too full to taste any of them. Will try them next time. :)The cendol was disappointing. It came melted and taste bad. It has a weird sour aftertaste, but my sister said hers doesnt has the sour taste. Gula Melaka is supposed to taste sour?? Sigh. Is it because I was expecting a lot or it is just not good?
Cendol RM2.50

Third stop: San Shu Gong's Cendol
Didnt have the chance to eat Satay Celup and Nadeje's Mille Crepe this round. Will want to taste them next time. :)
I'd tried SanShuGong's cendol 2 years ago, it was good. It used to have them in every SanShuGong in Malacca town, but some no longer serve cendol now. They closed down the cafe in Dataran Pahlawan, only tidbits sold there. So, we walked all the way back to Jonker Street's SanShuGong for cendol.
Anyway, the cendol didnt disappoint me. Durian smells like durian. Haha. Rachel's advice: Dont take Durian Cendol and Gula Melaka Cendol at the same time. Take either one only. Because Durian tastes strong and covers the Gula Melaka fragrance. I like the cendol. It wasnt that sweet till you will wanna shout SWEET, just nice~
Durian Cendol RM 5.80
Gula Melaka Cendol RM4.80

4th Makan-makan stop: Jonker 88
The usual long queue at Jonker 88 earlier that day. TIPS: To enjoy Jonker 88 without long queue, try going within 5-7pm. There'll be less people queuing and you do not need to wait for seats. I'd tried this twice and it worked well. I didnt queue long just 2 person in front of me and have no problems searching for seats.
This is Baba Asam Laksa. We didnt get to taste Baba Laksa this time. It was sold out. Anyway, it was good. Please be reminded to not compare Baba Asam Laksa with those from Penang. They are not the same. This is a Nyonya food. From left, E.P.S. Cendol (some special cendol with extra ingredients such as sweetcorn, nuts, etc), Sour Sop Ice Kacang, and Baba Cendol(traditional). Baba Cendol is the authentic Baba Cendol while others tastes good as well. As expected, gula melaka tasted just nice, the authentic aroma and not too sweet. Baba Cendol and the EPS cendol was similar, the only difference would be the ingredients. There are more ingredients in EPS as mentioned. The sour sop cendol was interesting. Instead of having too much of very sweet Gula Melaka, we ordered something sour. It was good. I love it. SLURPssss...
Baba Cendol RM2
EPS Cendol RM4
Sour Sop Cendol RM3

Rachel's choice: Jonker 88's cendols are creative but still keeps the authentic Baba Cendol in their menu and most important, authentic and cheap. RM 2 for Baba Cendol today even when they are so famous. I think they are famous for some down-to-earth reasons.
But I prefer the rice ball. The 'loose' rice has better texture but the rice ball has better aroma. I thought it was quite interesting though it was rather soft - didn't feel like eating rice.
ReplyDeleteYea...u r the odd one...I dont like the sticky rice balls~
